Interested in the surname Hindle in and around Great Harwood. Most particularly looking for the parents of James Hindle born circa 1790-1795 who joined the 84th of Foot in 1810 and served in the Napoleonic Wars and who, in 1820, married Hannah Heap of Burnley. They may have lived at Oakenshaw. In 1831 they emigrated to Upper Canada (now Ontario).

I am researching the RUTTER families from Croston, Lancashire and have found connections in Gt Harwood to SMALLEY, YATES & NOWEL.
Alexander SMALLEY was bapt 18 Feb 1710/11 at Great Harwood and married MARTHA YATES   17 MAY 1733   Blackburn. The IGI shows his daughter ESTHER SMALLEY Christening:  30 NOV 1733   Croston, Lancashire,  Father:  ALEXR. SMALLEY    Mother:  MARGT ?
She married 13 Oct 1760 Andrew RUTTER, this family having been in Croston area for a number of generations but his birth is not on the IGI. Their son Revd John RUTTER was the Bretherton School Master before becoming Vicar of Littleborough Bet. 1795 - 1816 His second son was William Smalley RUTTER b 13 May 1792 at Croston and he became the County Coroner in Salford and had a son Edmund Yates RUTTER a Chemist/Druggist/Dentist in Kensington, London. Revd John's eldest son Thomas was a Surgeon in Devonport and had a son John Yates RUTTER who emigrated to Sydney where is also was a Surgeon and died there in 1865 Revd John also had a son Henry Yates RUTTER, b Littleborough and a Book Keeper in Manchester. Revd John's youngest son Richard b 1807 Littleborough has a son Henry Yates RUTTER b c1839 Manchester a Smallware Dealer in 1881 and Paper Merchants Agent in Cheetham St in 1891. So that Gt Harwood surnames of SMALLEY and YATES were carried on in generations of Rutters.
The parents of Alexander SMALLEY could possibly be John c 1690 of Whalley who married Elizabeth NOWEL who could descend from the family  who owned Netherton (Lower Town) of Great Harwood and acquired land at nearby Read in 1364 and at the dissolution of Whalley Abbey

Paul Dennett
My g/g/g/g/grandfather was Benjamin West who was born in Great Harwood round 1776.  His parents were Christopher West and Catharine Whalley.  He joined His Majesty's 48th Regiment of Foot in 1804, married one Bridget Riley in Ireland, and then went off to fight the Napoleonic forces in the Peninsular Wars. In 1817 he shipped out to New South Wales with his family, took a discharge, and in Sydney resumed his original employment, that of tailor.
Does anybody know anything about the West or Whalley families prior to the late 1700s?

Great grand father Thomas Chippendale, born in Great Harwood on the 29th of March 1835 (son of Robert Chippendale and Alice Brogden), married Nanny Holden (or Olding, Halden), born in Tottleworth in 1837 (daughter of John Holden and Ellen Fielding), on the 8th of September 1855 in Blackburn.
They emigrated to Australia. Thomas on the "Saldanhna"in 1863 and Nanny, with 3 or 4 ? children, followed on the "Golden Land" in 1865.

My family seems to have passed through Great Harwood in the 18th century; John Gibson was born in the village in 1798.  He was a weaver.  I believe his father was also called John, baptised at St. Bartholomew's 26 September 1776, married Margaret Ashworth there in 1798.  He was a calico printer.  I believe his father was called Henry, baptised in the village in 1747, married to Margret Giles in May 1772 .  His father was called John, but there it gets a bit (even more) hazy.  There was a John Gibson who married Anne Bradshaw in Altham in 1744 who could well be the man.  Anne's father and grandfather were both called Henry, so that could be where the name came from, but that's just guesswork.
Does anyone know where I can find if the John (born around 1725), who was Henry's father, was baptised in Great Harwood?  I know pretty well what happened to the family after John the weaver left for Blackburn.

I am researching my Hallworth family history, so far I am back with my gggg parents who were in Great Harwood/Clayton Le Moors. Elisha Hallworth (ggg father) ,lived in Holgate street (number 33) in the 1901 census, his sister Lucy married a George Hindle, and his son George William (my gg father) married a Mary or a Margaret Baron. Elisha was one of seven children. He and his wife Janet Fielding had 10 children.
Elisha's brother Albert died in the Great War and I was proud to see his name on the memorial on my recent visit.
Elisha's father George married Ellen Tattersall and during the 1840's to 1880's they lived in Clayton Le Moors, in Pickup Street, George was a printer.

James Chippendale married Ellen Duxbury 1814 Gt Harwood.
Catherine born 1821, Rishton, married Thomas Eastwood aprox 1842, they are on the Census 1851.
John Chippendale born 1815 Whitebirk brother of Catherine was on 1841 Census for Waddington with Ellen and Peter but no James Chippendale their father. John married Alice Dugdale 1844 at Blackburn and lived at Waddington he is buried at the local Church[St Helens]
Peter is on 1861, 1871, 1881, Census for Gt Harwood, [ married]
Ellen Chippendale re married as a widow 1843 to James Slinger and died at Waddington their name is mentioned in the local history book on residents of Waddington at that time they were carpet weavers until the mill was burned down, they then went back to cottage weaving.
I would love to hear from related Chip's and would like to find James Chippendale burial if any?
My Gt Grandfather Peter Chippendale came to Halifax 1870s and married 1874, so I am half Red and half white Rose.

John Kent
My maternal father was John Walter Aspden born 1888 in Stacksteads?. He died in 1917 of appendicitis while serving in the Lancashire Fusiliers and is buried in Crowhurst Church Yard, East Sussex. His grave is marked with a Commonwealth War Graves Commission head stone.
Using various web site information I have traced his ancestors back to Great Harwood. William Aspden, born 1801, who recorded himself in censuses as a farmer being the earliest. After William there followed 3 generations of John Aspden including my grandfather, John Walter.
William was married to a Margaret, their son John was married to Jane, the next John to a Sarah and John Walter was married to my grandmother, Mary Bertha Jones of Crowhurst, Sussex.
My mother, Beatrice, was born in Middleton on 11/09/1915.
All of my information so far was easily obtained. I would however be interested to hear from anybody who has any information about my ancestors from Great Harwood. See also

Would be grateful for any information, however little, about Joseph Kemp, born 1866, died 1947.  He was the director of two cotton mills in Read, Friendship and Victoria, I believe, and was a benefactor of the town in his younger years. The family lived for quite a while in Sawley before Joseph moved to Lytham. He had a son, James Robert born 1890 in Read, but Iam now told he also had a daughter, Mary, of whom I have no knowledge.
Also links with Chew (above) but differnt family names too.

G.Grandfather Thomas, born 1856 in Louisville, Kentucky, and two brothers John and James, having "allegedly" escaped a wagon train massacre in America at a young age, returned to England and seem to have become miners
Most of the family worked in various capacities in the Cotton Mills of GH and Clitheroe. My Grandfather, William Middlehurst, was a Painter and Decorator, he also fought his way through the major battles of the First World War. My father Frederick (Fred) was an Illustrator and engraver, served in the Second World War, injured in bombing, later moving to London.
My grandfather told me that in the 30s/40s a factory flywheel had broken free and crashed through the mill causing extensive damage (he made no mention of anyone being hurt), I would love to know more about this, and my family, if anyone knows anything

Nicholas HINDLE aka Hendle was a Grenadier FootGuard fought Spain, Holland and  wounded fighting at Waterloo. I have his army records from The Archives Kew. He is found before the Old Bailey Chelsea London,having stolen a blanket, states his age in 1821 as 26. He is jailed for 3 months.
1823 he is married in Chelsea London to Eliza Bird. 1841 census Park Place Kensington Eliza is with the 2 kids no sign of Nicholas. Daughter Ann Hindle/Hendle born c 1826 married 1843 Kensington to George Norton and traced. But states dad Nicholas HINDLE occupation as NONE/nil should that be deceased???
Son William HENDLE aka Hindle born 1832 baptised 1833 St Margarets Westminster London.  He sailed to New Zealand and married 1856 and died a lighthouse keeper 1881 NZ . He doesnt mention parents on any document.

One of his sons Luke, born1858 in Tipperary, married Ellen and lived in Gt Harwood with his wife and six children, Patrick b 1890, Julia b 1892, Maryann b 1894, Elizabeth b 1896, John b 1898, Dennis b 1900. I'm researching the Stroyan family in England and I located 3 names: James Stroyan b 3Q 1872, Jane Stroyan b 3Q of 1874 and Annie Stroyan b 1Q 1877 in Gt Harwood, Blackburn. Their father was Thomas Stroyan , a shepherd, & mother Annie Guthrie. Thomas was b 1840 in Clachaneasy, Penninghame, Wigtonshire, and Annie in 1841 in Wigtown, Wgt. As a shepherd Thomas moved a great deal. He married in 1865 in Wigtown, Wgt. His other children were :  Margaret  b 1866 in Bargrennan, Kirkcudbrightshire, Thomas b 1869 in Littleborough, Rochdale and finally Rachael b 1881 in Clayton le Moors, Blackburn after a move to there in late 1880. I realise it was but a brief 7-8years stay in Great Harwood but thought it might be of interest and I would like to hear from any body interested in the Stroyans.

My 3Great Grandparents James Starkie & Susannah Wensley, married at Church Kirk 1841. Also lived in Blackburn, Billington & Roughlee before arriving in Great Harwood.
James & Susannah are in Great Harwood on the 1871 census, with some of their children living with them. James died in 1875, but Susannah still lived in Great Harwood until her death in 1907. Both are buried in St Bartholomew's Church.
My Great- great grandparents Thomas Starkie and Elizabeth Walton married at St Bartholomew's in 1869, and were living in Great Harwood on 1871 and 1881 census. All of their children were christened at St Bartholomew's and two infant sons are probably buried there.

I am looking for my Paternal Grandmother's relations, the Rosbottoms. The family originated at Ince-in-Makerfield, Wigan but moved to Great Harwood between 1891 and 1901 and are listed on the 1901 census at 45 Club Street. The family consisted of Richard (Father), Maria (mother, nee Williams), 6 daughters - Lizzy, Eda, Margaret Ellen (who married John Wilding and had a son, Thomas), Roseannah, Ruth and Rachel (my grandma, known as "Nan". She died in 1971) and two boys - Emanuel and Hurbert. Richard had a twin brother Thomas and a younger sister, Alice. I have found a link to Alice's descendants.
Rachel married a man called Harold Brooks Pedley in March 1916 at Mount Zion Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Great Harwood. At the time she lived at 6 Princess Street, Great Harwood and he came from Rishton ( his family originally were quarrymen from Facit). For some reason (the big family secret!!!!), she left Harold and moved to Rothwell in West Yorkshire where she met the man who was my grand-father (I never met him, he died in 1948 - 7 years before I was born).
This is the reason for my search, I have very little knowledge of this branch of my family since Rachel never spoke of her family, save for her big sister Margaret Ellen, who I met a couple of times almost 40 years ago! The Wilding family she married lived in Clayton-le-Moors, Accrington or Oswaldtwistle.

My husband's family tree which I am researching has one ancestor named Linda Taylor b 22/01/1875 d 7/09/1898 in Chihuahua, Mexico.
I would be interested to find out if anyone knows why she lived & died in Mexico.
Another ancestor, Herbert Taylor  b 1871? or 1881 d 05/04/1916 is registered on Basra Memorial, Iraq . There is  a 1st World War 'Death Penny' given to surviving family members of men killed in action, still in the family. It would be interesting to learn more about Herbert's life.

My Great Grandfather was William Griffiths (1850 -1916 ) a builder and mason. I have anecdotal material suggesting he built some of the cotton mills and several houses in Great Harwood. Great grandfather died aged 65 in 1916 at 1 Hartley Street, Great Harwood from bronchitis. I have researched as much as I can from the resources available to me in Australia. I have no photograph of him but I am hoping some other branch of the family may have one and also that there is someone else researching this family so that we can exchange information.
William had four daughters who all worked in the cotton mills in Great Harwood. Annie, Susan. Harriet and Jane. He had a son also William Griffiths (1876-1915 ) also a builder who died in 1915 from a gastric haemorrhage at 2 Arthur Street, Great Harwood aged 39. This William left a widow Ann and six small children. Perhaps some of these children have descendants still living in the Great Harwood area.
Great Grandfather Griffiths had a step-daughter Minnie Pate (1863 - ) who had several children.  I have some interesting information about Minnie's antecedents if there are any Pate descendants in Great Harwood.

My husband has a memory of visiting an "uncle" Noah (pronounced Noey) in the 1950s in Great Harwood.  He has no idea of his surname, but family surnames include Crossley, Archer and Whittaker.  Can anyone help with such scant information?

My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Gouldsborough born 1829 in Blackburn Great Grandfather John Rigby. Prior to her marriage Elizabeth had a daughter Sarah Ann Gouldsborough born 1848.
John and Elizabeth had a son Walter Rigby born 1860 in Blackburn.
Sarah married James Smith in 1868 but she already had a daughter Elizabeth Gouldsborough born 1867 in Clayton-le-Moors.
Elizabeth married William Ainsworth in 1889 in Blackburn.
