John owned very little husbandry materials or livestock and no looms, although there was a spinning wheel, so his main income was probably from another source. From the unusual amount of tables, forms, chairs, stools and six cushions in a household with few other luxuries, and the presence of a 'mash tubb' it is clear that John was running an alehouse. This is confirmed by the inventory of John Mercer in 1669, which lists 9 shillings owing to John Taylor for funeral expenses. It is not clear from this inventory where John's alehouse was.
