Garden of Remembrance

After the 1914 - 18 War the council was looking for a suitable site to erect a memorial to the men of the town who had died in the fighting. In 1920 three men, James Boardman, William Pickup and Henry Milton Thompson gave land to the Council for the purpose of laying out a public park and in 1925 it was decided to place the memorial on part of this land.

The unveiling

Unveiled on the edge of town on 2nd October 1926 by Major General Sir Neil Malcolm, K.C.B., D.S.O., assisted by Mrs. Ormerod of Great Harwood who had lost three sons in the war.

A Garden of Remembrance was created around the memorial, the rest of the land was laid out as a park and playing fields.

and on the base

To the glory of God, and in memory of the
men from this town who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-1918:
as a thank-offering to those who served in the War and have been restored to their homes: and as a perpetual reminder of the four years of great anxiety and sorrow which we shared together, and of the glorious victory, which, by the mercy of God, finally crowned our aims.

The Korean War
and
Falkland Islands Conflict
are also commemorated.
